I have a simple nautical nail art look and tutorial to share with you for Tutorial Tuesday! It’s been a while since I’ve done a tutorial for you guys, I just don’t really have any new tutorial ideas. Is there anything you want a tutorial for? I’d love to hear it so please leave a comment below! For today, I’m going to show you a fun mani I wore for a boating weekend 2 weeks ago. They are perfect for summer and simple enough that I even had a similar pedicure to match!
Let’s take a look at the manicure first!
- On every nail besides my pinkies, I painted three coats of KBShimmer Low And Be Bold.
- For my thumbs, index, and middle fingers:
- I painted one coat of Seche Vite top coat to help speed up the drying process.
- Once dry, I cut pieces of striping tape and applied them horizontally across my nails evenly spaced out.
- I then painted one coat of OPI My Boyfriend Scales Walls over the entire nail. (Do this process one nail at a time.)
- While still wet, carefully peel the tape back up off of the nail to reveal the blue stripes underneath.
- The anchor accent nail was done with OPI My Signature Is “DC” and you can follow my tutorial below!
- For my pinkies, I painted two coats of OPI My Signature Is “DC.”
- All nails were topped with a coat of Seche Vite.
Onto the tutorial for the cute anchor accent nail! Here is a sneak peek at the step by step process, you will find instructions and full size photos further down in this post:
Let’s get started!
Polishes used: KBShimmer Low And Be Bold, OPI My Signature Is “DC”
Tools used: small dotting tool, large dotting tool, detail brush.
Step 1) Paint three coats of KBShimmer Low And Be Bold on the entire nail.
Step 2) Using your detail brush and OPI My Signature Is “DC,” paint a vertical line in the center of the nail.
Step 3) Using your detail brush and OPI My Signature Is “DC,” paint a curved diagonal line up from the bottom of the vertical line.
Step 4) Using your detail brush and OPI My Signature Is “DC,” paint a curved diagonal line up from the bottom of the vertical line on the opposite side.
Step 5) Using your detail brush and OPI My Signature Is “DC,” paint a small line vertically downward from one edge of a curved line.
Step 6) Using your detail brush and OPI My Signature Is “DC,” paint a small line horizontally outward from the same edge of the curved line. Now you have an “arrow head” at the end of the curved line!
Step 7) Using your detail brush and OPI My Signature Is “DC,” paint another “arrow head” at the end of the other curved line. Now your anchor bottom is complete!
Step 8) Using your detail brush and OPI My Signature Is “DC,” paint a medium horizontal line 1/3 of the way down from the top of the anchor for the cross bar.
Step 9) Dip your large dotting tool in a drop of OPI My Signature Is “DC” and dot the top of the anchor.
Step 10) Take your small dotting tool and dip it into a drop of KBShimmer Low And Be Bold and dot into the center of the bigger silver dot. This creates the illusion of a silver circle for the anchor ring without the hassle of hand painting a circle like I did in my manicure above.
Don’t forget to add a thick, quick drying top coat to protect and seal in your design! I prefer Seche Vite, H K Girl Top Coat, or Poshe. Put a thick bead of top coat on the brush and gently spread it toward the tips and sides, taking great care to not let the bristles touch the polish underneath. Thinner top coats can cause streaking or bleeding of the colors and the bristles drag lines through the design. YOU’RE DONE!

So Cute! What a great tutorial!
I love it 🙂
Great tutorial, Jacki!
Such a fun tutorial, love the striped nails as well!
Question, can you do this with gel nails? When you do stripes with gel nails do you have to cure completely and wipe off the sticky layer before applying tape to do stripes? It seems like gel nails make it too hard for the tapento stick because of the tacky residue that stays after you cure it
Hey Jessica! I'm really not that familiar with doing nail art using Gels. I would assume that even if you got the tape down and painted the color on top, when you would pull the tape back up before curing the color, the gel polish may just bleed into the lines. and if you cured before pulling the tape back up, it would keep the tape in the cured layer without being able to peel up to reveal the stripes.
I asked a fellow blogger who is more familiar with gel and here is her response "I read somewhere that you can cure your base color, cleanse with alcohol, apply your tape, polish, and then FLASH CURE for like 2 seconds (UV) and then pull off the tape before that next color is super hard." but she hasn't been able to try it. Let me know if you try it or find another way to get it to work!
