Spun Sugar Spider Web Nail Art!

In Nails, Sinful Colors, Zoya by Jacki27 Comments

Hello, readers! Are you ready for more Halloween themed nail art? I am SUPER DUPER EXCITED about this mani. It came out better than in my head! The idea came to me while grocery shopping last week, crazy right? I walked by an end cap of Halloween decorations and saw a bag of that stretchy “spider web” flossy stuff that you can drape over things at your house. I hope you know what I’m talking about.

Anyway, I was on the hunt for tiny spider decorations. Let me tell you, that was much harder than I thought. My friend Gina came to the rescue(!!) by sending me these teeny foil spider stickers she had from last year. I couldn’t find any tiny spider decorations. The smallest were one per nail and I wanted to be able to fit a few like you would with the black spider rings on the fake webs for your house decorations.

  • I started out with one coat of Zoya Savita.
  • Next, I did one coat of Zoya Mimi for some added shimmer for the base.
  • I topped it with Seche Vite and let dry before moving on.
  • The webs are Sinful Colors Snow Me White using the “spun sugar” technique. Basically, you put a blob of polish on wax paper and stir it with a toothpick while blowing on it to dry it out. It gets stringy as it dries out and you can stretch the strings up and onto your nail in all directions to create this web look. I like to blow on the strings as I’m stretching them over my nails, too. It makes a big mess because I end up dabbing the toothpick on the skin all around my nails to make new strings so be prepared for a lot of cleanup!
  • When they are drying, I gently dabbed my finger down around the nail to stick any strings that didn’t initially stick onto the nail.
  • I then applied some spider stickers. For longer wear time, I’d recommend nail glue or top coat over the whole nail but that could take away from the awesome texture or bleed the white so be careful. I’m showing with no top coat but some of the strings can wash off when you do them thin like this. (Some nail friends and I were just talking about how it would be awesome for a hairspray-like setting spray for nails to use on designs like this where we don’t want the texture to be lost with top coat but also don’t want the strings to come off in the first 24 hours. Know of anything?)

What do you think of this fun Halloween mani? I think it would be great for an accent nail if you didn’t want to take the time to do a full mani. If you are wondering, this is a picture of what I looked like BEFORE cleanup. Haha, I did warn you that this was messy! Thanks for reading!

Yes! You did the impossible. I FEAR spiders. However – this is the BEST Halloween design I've seen in years!!! WOW!!! You have every right to brag about this one Jacki!!! Wow! The purple background, the webs, the stickers – all go together stunningly.
It is the greatest feeling when your vision in your mind gets blown away (pun intended – as you blew on the webs…lame joke…OK, but the sentiment of the statement is still true….your awesome nail art has turned me into a babbling bimbo…) 🙂

This looks incredible! Such a clever way to use the sugar spun technique.
The before picture is somewhat off-putting in terms of trying it at home though 😉

Wow! What a fabulous use of the spun sugar technique! You have amazing vision to be able to look at that spiderweb stuff in the store and figure out how to translate it to your nails. Also very cool to use a purple background instead of the usual orange for Halloween manis (not that there's anything wrong with those). I'm curious about your cleanup process because the before picture looks like some of the polish you'd want to remove was on top of your nails. How did you manage to get the bunched up, sticky polish off your nails and still leave the webbing right at the edge of your polish? I hope that makes sense. Again, this is fantastic!

Hi…still hoping for a reply to my question above but, in response to your comment above about wishing there was a hairspray-like setting spray for nails: when I read that, I thought, "Gee, yeah, that would be great." Then I had a big duh moment this afternoon when I was touching up my mother's nails before she went out to play mahjong with her friends. She was in a hurry so I reached for my (this is the duh moment) Beauty Secrets Nail Polish Dryer Professional Manicurist's Finishing Spray! I buy it at Sally Beauty (http://reviews.sallybeauty.com/6151/SBS-162100/reviews.htm) and use it quite a lot. It might work for the particular need you have. Just thought I'd mention it. 🙂 Delphi

Thanks! All I did was use 100% acetone and pointed qtips to get as close to the nail as I could. Then, I went back with my cleanup brush and got closer.

haha, messy! But SO cool! You really captured that look. I hate spiders, but I think I would probably wear this!

And well, I wonder if you could use actual hairspray on them…

This is so freakin awesome! As Debbie Crumpet said, best spun sugar application ever. I believe I will be borrowing this idea – and of course will totally link/tag you. 😉

I only tried the sugar spun technique once and it was super fun. I can definitely tell that many will try recreating this look because it is incredible and just the perfect Halloween manicure! I love it!
